Adult Learn to Sail 2026

Our mission at Northbridge Sailing Club (NSC) is to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where individuals and families can learn, practice and enjoy sailing.

Our popular Adult Learn to Sail (ALTS) course is designed for adults (obviously!) to learn the ropes in a group training session on the beautiful and protected waters of Middle Harbour, sailing in our club Pacers. It is an offering unique to NSC which you will find nowhere else in Sydney!

So, whether you're new to sailing, or need a refresher before getting back on the water, this intensive course will build fundamental sailing skills from the ground up. Held over 4 weekends on Saturday afternoons from 7th to 28th November 2026, the goal is to get you sailing independently by the end of the course.

You will be able to apply the fundamental skills you learn to any kind of boat, big or small, and can pursue any pathway at NSC following the course. Our graduates are called CATS, or Continuing Adult Trainee Sailors, and can be seen on waters on Sundays hiring boats to enjoy social sailing, free mentoring on selected dates, or when they feel like some intensive skill building, hiring an instructor to apply some more pressure!

Crewing opportunities sometimes arise, or you can take the plunge and invest in your own dinghy to race on Sunday afternoons!

The course will include a mix of classroom theory and plenty of on-water practice, adjusted for any prior knowledge.

Course Price:

$320 per person, plus membership. Includes free mentoring on selected Sundays following completion when you hire a boat at nominal cost.

Membership:

Adult membership is $320 for the season, which runs until April.

To enrol in this course you must first enrol as an Adult Member. Go to Membership, choose Retiurning Member if you have sailed previously and have an Australian Sailing number, or New Member otherwise. On completion you will receive an email with member log in details so you can sighn up for this course.

Clothing

Participants must come equipped with their own NON-inflatable life jackets (Whitworths, Zhik) and suitable water wear including a secure hat and long-sleeve rash vest for sun protection, water shoes, and a wetsuit if it's cold (boardshorts or swimming leggings are fine otherwise). Assume you will get wet.
